IZU SHABOTEN ZOO
Who doesn’t love some hot spring capybara?!
I mean, honestly, if I had a nickel…
Take some time away from the temple visits and seafood buffets to spend a few hours with your favorite furry friends. Located next to Mt. Omuro is the Izu Shaboten Zoo which forms part of a wider geo-park in the area where you can enjoy the free-roaming squirrel monkeys as well as plenty of other animals.
Opened in 1959, Izu Shaboten Zoo has grown larger and larger as its inhabitants have also grown in number and population. When you visit, definitely do not miss a chance to watch the local celebrity, the capybara, taking one of several daily dips in their own private hot spring. For those of you who always pause scrolling to watch the latest cat video, this will make your day. A stoic family of capybara chilling out in a hot spring will definitely break at least the wifi if not the internet itself.
